Indulgent mushroom steak sauce with savory beef stock, red wine, and fragrant thyme.
Ingredients:
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup chopped onion
  • 1 (12 ounce) package white mushrooms, stemmed and sliced
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon freshly minced garlic
  • 0.75 cup beef stock
  • 0.25 cup dry red wine (such as Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 sprigs fresh thyme, or to taste
  • 0.125 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or more to taste
Instructions:
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Sauté onion until softened and translucent, about 4 minutes. Stir in mushrooms and salt, cooking until they release liquid, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook until aromatic, about 1 minute.
  • Mix together the beef stock, wine, and Worcestershire sauce in a small measuring cup. Pour the mixture into the skillet, add thyme sprigs and pepper, then bring to a boil.
  • Simmer uncovered over low heat until the sauce thickens slightly and the liquid reduces, about 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
