Crunchy homemade onion rings with a crispy coating and sweet, tender onions.
Ingredients:
  • 1 large Vidalia or other sweet onion
  • 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed
  • 1.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk, or as needed
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.75 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 0.125 teaspoon seasoned salt, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Cut the onion into 1/4-inch thick rings.
  • Preheat oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C) and set up a wire rack on a sheet of aluminum foil.
  • Set up your breading station by arranging 3 wide, shallow dishes. In the first dish, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In the second dish, combine milk and egg. Place bread crumbs in the third dish.
  • Coat each onion ring with flour, ensuring full coverage. Dip into the egg mixture using a fork to coat evenly. Gently shake off excess liquid. Coat the onion in bread crumbs, ensuring an even covering. Tap off any extra crumbs and place on a wire rack to prepare the rest of the onion rings.
  • Fry 3 to 4 onion rings in batches until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes each. Drain on paper towels between batches.
  • Add a flavorful touch by sprinkling with seasoning salt just before serving.
