Impress kids with dazzling birthday cake creation!
Ingredients:
  • 2 x 340g packets golden buttercake cake mix or 2 quantities Homemade buttercake (see related recipe)
  • 2 x 165g packets jam rollettes (see Cooking class)
  • 2 quantities Buttercream icing (see below)
  • Blue food colouring
  • 10 x 6g packets Candy Rolls or Fizzers
  • 2 large round peppermints
  • 5cm piece licorice twist
  • 4cm piece licorice strap
  • 125g butter, softened
  • 225.00 gm icing sugar mixture
  • 20.60 gm milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced, and lightly grease an 8 cup-capacity metal pudding steamer.
  • For a quick and delicious treat, follow the instructions on the packet to make the cake batter. Alternatively, use the homemade cake recipe provided. Spread the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 1 hour or until fully cooked. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Trim the top of the cake with a serrated knife if needed. Place the cake cut-side down on a board to create the body. Arrange the rollettes around the base of the cake to make tentacles, referring to the picture for guidance. Secure them in place with toothpicks.
  • Prepare the icing: In a bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter until pale. Slowly add the icing sugar mixture and milk, continuing to beat until well combined.
  • Color the icing a beautiful shade of blue. Generously spread it over the top and sides of the cake and the rollettes, making sure to add a little more icing to the top of the cake. Use a palette knife to create a textured finish. Place Candy Rolls or Fizzers on the tentacles to create the suckers. Cut two pieces, each 5mm, from the licorice twist. Use a small amount of icing to attach one piece of licorice twist to each mint. Finally, position the mint pieces on the body to form the eyes.
  • Slice licorice strap into a 2mm wide, 4cm long piece, then place it under the eyes to create the mouth. Enjoy your creation!
