Brighten up your dessert spread with these elegant floral cookies.
Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 30 drops red food color
  • 1 egg
  • 1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • Red sugar, if desired
  • About 3 dozen yellow candy-coated chocolate candies or other small yellow candies
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, cream together butter, sugar, vanilla, food color, egg, and cream cheese using an electric mixer or a spoon until smooth. Mix in the flour. Cover and refrigerate for about 2 hours until the dough is firm.
  • Roll the dough into 1 1/4-inch balls and coat them with red sugar. Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour before proceeding.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Place the dough balls 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Using a sharp knife, make 6 cuts on the top of each ball, going three-fourths of the way through to create 6 wedges. Gently separate the wedges to form flower petals; the cookies will spread and flatten beautifully as they bake.
  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until edges turn golden brown, then press 1 candy into the center of each cookie right out of the oven and transfer to a wire rack.
