Upgrade your Tuna Mornay by adding potato gems for a crispy twist. Creamy tuna, melted cheese, and crunchy gems create an irresistible texture combo. Quick and easy to make, perfect with a side salad or veggies. Kids won't even realize you snuck in some peas or corn!
Ingredients:
  • 350g frozen potato gems
  • 60g butter, chopped
  • 40g (1/4 cup) plain flour
  • 500ml (2 cups) milk
  • 80g (1 cup) grated tasty cheese
  • 425g can tuna in springwater, drained, flaked
  • 20.00 ml chopped chives or continental parsley (optional)
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 230C/210C fan-forced. Lightly grease a 6-cup ovenproof dish. Place potato gems on a baking tray and bake for 20 minutes, turning halfway, until crispy and golden brown.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter until bubbly. Add onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until soft, but not browned. Sprinkle flour over and cook for 1 minute while stirring constantly.
  • Gradually pour in the milk while stirring continuously until the mixture is smooth. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until it boils and thickens. Take it off the heat and mix in half of the cheese until melted. Gently fold in the tuna and season to taste.
  • Spread the mixture in the dish. Turn on the grill setting in the oven. Place potato gems on top of the tuna mixture and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Grill for 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling. If desired, add herbs, then serve immediately.
