New Orleans-inspired muffuletta: Italian loaf stuffed with olive salad, cold meats, and cheese for a flavorful and hearty sandwich.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup pimento-stuffed green olives, crushed
  • 0.5 cup drained kalamata olives, crushed
  • 0.5 cup pepperoncini, drained
  • 0.25 cup roughly chopped pickled cauliflower florets
  • 0.25 cup marinated cocktail onions
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons drained capers
  • 1 tablespoon chopped celery
  • 1 tablespoon chopped carrot
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.75 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon celery seed
  • 0.5 cup olive oil
  • 0.25 cup canola oil
  • 0.25 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 (1 pound) loaves Italian bread
  • 8 ounces thinly sliced Genoa salami
  • 8 ounces thinly sliced cooked ham
  • 8 ounces sliced mortadella
  • 8 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 8 ounces sliced provolone cheese
Instructions:
  • Prepare a vibrant olive salad by coarsely chopping green olives, Kalamata olives, pepperoncini, cauliflower, cocktail onions, garlic, capers, celery, and carrot.
  • In a medium bowl, mix oregano, basil, black pepper, and celery seed. Add olive oil, canola oil, and vinegar. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar or nonreactive container, ensuring it is fully covered with oil.
  • Refrigerate the covered jar or container for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  • Prepare the sandwiches by slicing the loaves of bread in half horizontally and gently scooping out some bread to create space for the filling.
  • Generously coat each slice of bread with the flavorful olive salad, ensuring the oil is evenly distributed.
  • Place a generous layer of salami, ham, mortadella, mozzarella, and Provolone slices on the bottom half of each loaf.
  • Place the upper halves of the loaves on top and cut the sandwiches into quarters.
  • Enjoy right away or store in the fridge tightly wrapped for a couple of hours to let the flavors blend and the olive salad seep into the bread.
