Create a festive red and green swirl red velvet sheet cake with light cocoa flavor. Leavened with baking soda, vinegar, and buttermilk for a classic touch.
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring, or as needed
  • 2 tablespoons green food coloring, or as needed
  • 0.75 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1.5 teaspoons distilled white vinegar
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare a 9x13-inch sheet pan by greasing it.
  • Cream together vegetable shortening and sugar until smooth and creamy, then mix in eggs until fully combined.
  • Combine the buttermilk, cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla extract into the shortening mixture, stirring until a smooth and uniform mixture is achieved.
  • Gradually sift the flour into the liquid ingredients, stirring until fully combined.
  • Transfer half of the batter into a different bowl.
  • Gently swirl red food color into one bowl of batter and green food color into the other bowl of batter.
  • Incorporate 3/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar into the red batter and green batter swiftly.
  • Alternate pouring the red and green batters into the prepared sheet pan to create a colorful pattern.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until the cake is lightly browned on top and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool completely before frosting.
