Decadent chocolate layer cake with irresistible smooth vanilla frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 1 2/3 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz unsweetened baking chocolate, melted, cooled
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour your baking pans. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat all cake ingredients on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl constantly. Switch to high speed and beat for 3 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally. Pour the batter into the pans.
  • Bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean: 30 to 35 minutes for rounds, 35 to 40 minutes for rectangle. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. Allow to cool completely for about 1 hour.
  • Combine powdered sugar and butter in a medium bowl, use a spoon or electric mixer on low speed. Add vanilla and just enough milk for a smooth and spreadable consistency. Use to fill and frost round layers, or frost the top of a rectangular cake.
