Rich Homemade Eggnog

Indulge in this luxurious chilled eggnog – a must-have drink for any gathering.
Ingredients:
  • 8 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup bourbon
  • Additional freshly grated nutmeg
Instructions:
  • In a medium bowl, vigorously whisk together egg yolks and sugar until they are thick and a vibrant lemon color. In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the milk and 1 cup of the whipping cream. Slowly incorporate the yolk mixture into the saucepan, continuously whisking. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring constantly until the mixture lightly coats the back of a metal spoon.
  • After turning off the heat, swirl in the vanilla and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Quickly cool the custard by placing the saucepan in cold water, stirring occasionally. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, but no more than 24 hours before serving.
  • Just prior to serving, mix bourbon into chilled custard. In a chilled small bowl, whip the remaining 1 cup of heavy cream with an electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the custard. Sprinkle with extra nutmeg and serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve. Eggnog can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
