Quick and delicious sauerbraten-style top round steak simmered in tangy vinegar gravy with optional sour cream topping.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 pounds top round steak, trimmed and sliced thin
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 (.75 ounce) packet dry brown gravy mix
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, heat the oil until shimmering. Add the sliced meat and sear until golden brown. Remove the meat from the pan. Stir in the gravy mix and water, then bring to a boil while stirring constantly.
  • Add onion powder, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, ginger, bay leaf, salt, and ground black pepper to taste. Put the meat back in the pan, lower the heat, cover, and simmer for one hour or until the meat is tender. Discard bay leaf.
  • Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish and bake covered at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 1/2 hours.
