Savory sausage and shrimp gumbo with colorful veggies in a flavorful, spicy broth, served over fluffy white rice.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (14 ounce) package Hillshire Farm® Smoked Sausage
  • 0.25 cup cooking oil
  • 0.25 cup flour
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded, chopped
  • 1 cup frozen sliced okra
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 0.5 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • Salt to taste
  • 0.5 pound large raw shrimp, peeled, deveined
  • 3 cups hot cooked long-grain white rice
Instructions:
  • Slice the sausage into 1/2-inch pieces and keep them ready.
  • In a 4-quart heavy saucepan, blend oil and flour until smooth. Cook and stir on medium-high heat for 3 minutes. Lower heat to medium and continue cooking and stirring until the roux turns a dark reddish brown, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Saute onion, bell peppers, celery, okra, and garlic until tender, about 8-10 minutes. Mix in Cajun seasoning.
  • Pour the flavorful broth into the pot and bring it to a lively boil. Cook and stir for 1 minute to develop the flavors. Lower the heat to a gentle simmer, then add in the savory sausage, zesty pepper sauce, bold black pepper, and a touch of salt. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 15 minutes to allow all the delicious flavors to meld together beautifully.
  • Uncover the pot and let it come to a lively boil. Drop in the shrimp and simmer until they turn a beautiful pink color, approximately 3 minutes.
  • Serve rice in bowls and generously spoon gumbo on top.
