Savory, spicy homemade Italian sausage sauce with green onions, red wine, and red pepper flakes. Versatile and delicious, perfect for any dish. Enhances flavor when made in advance.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • 1 (8 ounce) package fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 0.5 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Instructions:
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sizzle garlic in olive oil until golden. Add sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook for 4 minutes. Mix in green onions and continue cooking until sausage is evenly browned, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Saute mushrooms with fragrant basil and oregano for 5 minutes. Mix in tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, and tomato paste. Pour in water, red wine, sugar, and red pepper flakes. Season generously with salt and pepper. Simmer on low heat for a minimum of 1 hour to develop rich flavors.
