Sesame Seed Cookies I

Total Time:
Sicilian sesame seed cookies
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1.5 cups shortening
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 0.0625 teaspoon anise oil
  • 2 ounces sesame seeds
Instructions:
  • Mix flour and sugar in a bowl. Incorporate shortening using a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture looks like coarse meal.
  • If desired, add a small amount of anise oil, as it is very potent, to 1/2 cup of milk before combining with the flour mixture. Slowly pour in the remaining milk while mixing until the dough comes together.
  • Take small pieces of dough and form them into finger-sized rolls by rolling between your palms. Coat them in sesame seeds, which adhere better if they are placed in sugared water first, then transferred to a clean lint-free cloth. Roll the dough on the cloth to help the seeds stick, then flatten it to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut the dough into 2-inch strips and arrange them on an ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) until golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool completely, then store in an airtight container.
