Neat and delicious hand pies filled with a twist on classic Sloppy Joes, wrapped in flaky pie crust.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 0.5 medium onion, diced
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 (14.1 ounce) package refrigerated pie dough for a double-crust pie
  • 6 slices Cheddar cheese
Instructions:
  • In a sizzling skillet, brown ground beef and onion until crumbly for 7 to 8 minutes. Add bell pepper and garlic, cook until tender for 2 to 3 more minutes.
  • Combine 1 cup beef broth with ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and cayenne pepper in a pot and bring to a simmer. Pour in the second cup of broth, reduce heat to low, and simmer until thickened, about 30 to 45 minutes. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt, pepper, and cayenne.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water.
  • On a floured surface, roll out both pie crusts and cut six 5-inch circles. Add a slice of Cheddar cheese to the center of each circle, then spoon Sloppy Joe mixture on top. Fold the dough over and seal with a fork. Brush with egg wash and transfer hand pies to the baking sheet.
  • Bake in the oven until beautifully golden for 20-25 minutes.
