Tender round steak and onions cooked low and slow in rich gravy, a cozy and family-friendly dinner.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (2 1/2 pound) tenderized round steak, cut into 6 pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste
  • 0.5 cup cooking oil, divided
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon beef base (such as Better than Bouillon®)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups milk
Instructions:
  • Season both sides of the round steak pieces generously with a blend of salt and pepper, ensuring the seasoning is well incorporated into the meat.
  • In a large resealable bag, mix together 1/2 cup of flour and garlic powder. Add steak pieces, seal the bag, and shake well to coat the pieces evenly.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, warm 1/3 cup of oil until hot. Cook seasoned and floured steak pieces in batches in a single layer until browned, about 4 to 5 minutes per side. Keep warm after removing from the skillet. Repeat with the remaining pieces, adding more oil if needed, until all are browned.
  • Add onion slices to the skillet and gently stir until coated with the delicious pan drippings, letting them soften and separate slightly for about 2 minutes. Push the onions to one side of the skillet and bring back the seared steak pieces. Spread the steak evenly in the skillet and top with the onions for a mouthwatering combination.
  • Combine water, beef base, and Worcestershire sauce in a microwave-safe dish. Microwave for 1 minute on high, then transfer the mixture to a skillet. Cover and simmer on low heat for about 45 minutes until the steak is tender.
  • Take out the steak from the skillet and incorporate the reserved 1/2 cup of flour into the pan drippings. Turn up the heat to medium; vigorously stir and cook until bubbly, for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Add the milk and stir continuously until the gravy starts bubbling. Next, place the steak, onions, and any juices back into the skillet, cover it, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors meld together perfectly.
