Creamy Southern custard made with milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla, cooked until thick and chilled for a decadent treat.
Ingredients:
  • 1 quart whole milk
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • Heat the milk in a double boiler over simmering water, stirring occasionally until warmed.
  • In a large bowl, whisk eggs until light. Mix in sugar until well combined. Slowly whisk a small portion of hot milk into the egg mixture until warmed and thinned. Gradually pour the mixture back into the hot milk, whisking constantly.
  • Continue cooking and stirring until the custard thickens and can coat the back of a spoon. Use an instant-read thermometer to check that the custard reaches 180 degrees F (82 degrees C). Take off the heat, stir in the vanilla, and then transfer the custard to a container. Chill in the refrigerator until completely cold before serving.
