Elevate your spinach salad with zesty German mustard, juicy mandarin oranges, and aromatic Chinese five-spice powder, topped with sweet and spicy pecans.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup mandarin oranges, drained with liquid reserved
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Dusseldorf-style German mustard
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 0.125 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 0.5 cup pecan halves
  • 0.5 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 3 cups fresh spinach leaves
  • 2 green onions, chopped
Instructions:
  • Shake together the liquid from mandarin oranges, canola oil, olive oil, mustard, cloves, and Chinese five-spice powder in a tightly sealed jar until the dressing emulsifies.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add pecans and sugar, simmer until hot for 1 to 2 minutes. Season with rosemary and cayenne pepper, cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat, drain pecans on paper towels-lined plate.
  • Combine spinach and green onion in a large bowl. Add mandarin oranges and pecans on top. Finish by drizzling dressing over the salad before serving.
