Tender pulled pork marinated in root beer, seasoned with warm spices, slow-cooked for 6 hours in a sauce with root beer, balsamic vinegar, and whiskey. Serve on soft buns.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (4.5 pound) bone-in pork shoulder roast
  • 1 cup root beer
  • 2.5 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon celery salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.33333334326744 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1.5 cups root beer
  • 1.5 fluid ounces whiskey
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.75 cup prepared barbecue sauce
  • 10 hamburger buns, split
Instructions:
  • Marinate the pork shoulder roast in a large plastic bag with 1 cup of root beer, ensuring to remove all air from the bag. Seal and refrigerate for 6 hours to overnight.
  • Combine light brown sugar, kosher salt, black pepper, paprika, dry mustard, onion powder, garlic salt, celery salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg in a bowl the following day.
  • Take the meat out of the marinade and gently shake off any extra. Coat the meat thoroughly with the spice mixture, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Combine balsamic vinegar, 1 1/2 cups of root beer, whiskey, and brown sugar in a bowl, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, sear the meat until a brown crust forms on all sides, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer the meat to a slow cooker and pour in the balsamic vinegar-root beer mixture. Cook on High for 6 to 8 hours.
  • Take out the roast from the slow cooker and shred it using 2 forks. Remove the bones and all but 1 cup of the liquid from the cooker. Put the shredded meat back, add the barbecue sauce, and let it sit on Low until serving time. Serve on buns.
