Indulgent pirate cake topped with candy treasure. Perfect for themed parties.
Ingredients:
  • Candy necklaces
  • Round hard candies
  • Gummy ring, halved
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix
  • 1 cup water
  • Vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
  • Tray, 24x20 inches, covered with wrapping paper and plastic food wrap or foil
  • Yellow and orange paste food colors
  • 1 tub (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Creamy White Frosting
  • Red pull-and-peel licorice
  • Gold foil-covered chocolate coins
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease the bottom of a 13x9-inch pan with baking spray that includes flour. Prepare and bake the cake mix following the instructions on the box for a 13x9-inch pan, using 1 cup of water, oil, and eggs. Let it cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. Allow it to cool completely for about 1 hour.
  • Cut a 3-inch strip from the center of the cake. Then, slice that strip diagonally to create two 9-inch triangular wedges. You can either discard one wedge or save it for later use.
  • Place a 9x5-inch cake piece on a tray. Mix food colors into the frosting to create a golden yellow hue. Spread 1 tablespoon of frosting on 1 edge of a triangular wedge of cake. Place the wedge, frosting side down, onto the 9x5-inch cake piece on the tray, positioning it along the top edge of the larger cake piece. Freeze all cake pieces for 1 hour.
  • Gently spread 1 tablespoon of frosting on the top edge of a triangular wedge of cake. Attach the remaining 9x5-inch cake piece to the cake wedge to resemble a partially opened treasure chest. Seal the crumbs with a thin layer of frosting, then refrigerate or freeze for 30 to 60 minutes to set. Evenly spread the remaining frosting over the entire cake and use a fork to create a wood grain pattern on the surface.
  • Create charming handles and straps using pull-and-peel licorice. Fill the chest with a delightful assortment of chocolate coins, candy necklaces, and various hard candies. Place a gummy ring half as a clasp. Store the chest loosely covered.
