Exciting yeast bread recipe for kids to make from Betty Crocker Baking for Today cookbook - quick and easy bread making!
Ingredients:
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1 package quick active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 2 raisins
Instructions:
  • Combine 1 1/2 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl; set aside.
  • In a small saucepan, gently warm water, milk, and butter over medium heat until it reaches 125°F to 130°F. Combine with the yeast mixture. Add the egg, then gradually mix in additional flour until the dough is manageable. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Cover and allow to rest for 10 minutes before proceeding.
  • Prepare the cookie sheet by lightly greasing it with shortening or spraying it with cooking spray. Form a 2-inch piece of dough into a ball for the turtle’s head. Shape 4 walnut-size pieces of dough into balls for the feet, and shape 1 walnut-size piece of dough into the tail. Mold the remaining dough into a ball for the turtle body, then place it on the cookie sheet and gently flatten it. Securely attach the head, feet, and tail by placing one end of each under the edge of the body. Press raisins into the head to create the eyes. Allow the turtle to rise in a warm place for 20 minutes, covered.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Score a 1/4-inch-deep circular cut around the top edge of the pastry, then make crisscross cuts in the center to resemble a turtle's shell. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.
