Decadent turtle treats with chocolate, caramel, and nuts for a crowd-pleasing dessert.
Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups butter or stick margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 24 caramels
  • 1 bag (6 oz) semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup)
  • 2 teaspoons shortening
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 6 dozen pecan halves
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Combine butter, sugar, and almond extract in a large bowl. Add flour and salt, then mix well. If the dough is crumbly, incorporate 1 to 2 tablespoons of additional softened butter or margarine.
  • Divide the dough into 12 equal parts and roll each part into a 1/4-inch thick circle. If the dough is sticky, chill it for about 15 minutes. Cut each circle into 6 wedges and place them 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Remove from the oven and transfer the wedges to a wire rack to cool completely, which should take about 30 minutes.
  • Heat caramels in a 1-quart saucepan over medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently until melted. In a small microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips and shortening uncovered on High for 1 to 3 minutes, stirring halfway through, until melted and smooth for drizzling.
  • Gently coat two straight edges of each cookie in melted caramel, then press into chopped pecans. If caramel thickens, stir in up to 1 teaspoon of water and heat on low heat until soft.
  • Add a dollop of melted chocolate on each cookie, place a pecan half on top, and drizzle the rest of the chocolate over the cookies.
