Vegetarian twist on classic sandwich using flavorful tempeh instead of beef.
Ingredients:
  • 0.25 cup vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup minced onion
  • 2 (8 ounce) packages tempeh
  • 0.5 cup minced green bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.25 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses
  • 0.25 teaspoon celery seed
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • hamburger buns
Instructions:
  • Warm oil in a deep, 10-inch skillet over medium-low heat. Sauté onion until translucent. Crumble tempeh into the skillet and cook until golden brown. Stir in green pepper and garlic; cook for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Add the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, molasses, cayenne pepper, celery seed, cumin, salt, coriander, thyme, oregano, paprika, and black pepper to the mixture and stir well. Let it simmer for another 10 to 15 minutes. Serve hot over hamburger buns.
