Delicious holiday yeast doughnuts, perfect for dipping in chocolate glaze or adding festive sprinkles.
Ingredients:
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 0.75 cup white sugar
  • 0.25 cup butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 quarts oil for deep frying
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar for dusting
Instructions:
  • Mix yeast with 1 3/4 cups of flour in a large bowl. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm milk, sugar, butter, and salt until the butter melts. Combine this with eggs and the milk mixture in the flour bowl, then beat with a heavy-duty electric mixer on low for 30 seconds. Increase speed to high and beat for 3 minutes. Gradually add remaining flour while stirring until a firm, pliable dough forms.
  • Place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Knead for 4 to 5 minutes until smooth and supple. Then, place it in an oiled bowl, cover, and allow it to double in size for about 1 hour.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface, gently deflate it, and flatten it to a 1/2-inch thickness. Use a floured doughnut cutter to cut out doughnuts, reshaping any extra dough into more doughnuts. Place the doughnuts on baking sheets, cover them, and allow them to rise for 45 minutes.
  • Preheat oil in a deep fryer until it reaches 360°F (180°C).
  • Fry doughnuts in batches in hot oil until golden all over, then transfer to a wire rack to drain and cool.
  • Coat the cooled doughnuts generously with confectioners' sugar.
