Indulgent mac and cheese casserole with a crispy, cheesy bread crumb topping.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 0.25 cup butter, divided
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.25 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®)
  • 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 0.25 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease a 9x13-inch glass baking dish.
  • In a large pot, bring lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Add macaroni and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes. Drain and toss with half of the butter.
  • As the macaroni cooks, melt the rest of the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Sauté the onions until they start to soften, approximately 3 minutes. Mix in the flour and continue cooking for 5 minutes. Pour in the milk and let it simmer, stirring regularly, until it thickens, around 10 minutes.
  • Once the mixture is thick and smooth, blend in salt, white pepper, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, mustard, 2 cups Cheddar cheese, and 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Stir until cheese is completely melted, then fold in macaroni until well coated. Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish, ensuring the top is smooth. In a mixing bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup Cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese with bread crumbs, then sprinkle the mixture evenly over the macaroni.
  • Bake until the macaroni is piping hot and the crust turns a beautiful golden brown, approximately 30 minutes in the preheated oven.
