Patriotic flag cake with layers of red, white, and blue for a stunning 4th of July treat!
Ingredients:
  • 2 (15.25 ounce) packages white cake mix
  • 9 egg whites
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3.75 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons clear vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon blue food coloring
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 10 cups fluffy white frosting
  • 1 tablespoon white chocolate chips, or as needed
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar, or as needed
  • 1 4-inch round paper or cardboard stencil
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), then generously grease and line four 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, blend white cake mix, egg whites, vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract. Using an electric mixer, beat on low speed for 30 seconds, then increase to medium speed and beat for an additional 2 minutes until batter is slightly lumpy.
  • To create the red cakes: Divide half of the cake batter into a bowl, then stir in red food coloring. Spread the red batter evenly into two of the prepared 8-inch cake pans, then smooth the tops. Pour half of the remaining uncolored batter into another prepared cake pan and smooth the top to create the white cake layer.
  • Mix in blue food coloring into the remaining batter in the large mixing bowl until evenly colored. Gently fold in 1 cup of white chocolate chips until well combined. Pour the blue batter into the prepared 8-inch cake pan and use a spatula to smooth the top.
  • Bake all 4 cakes in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely on wire racks.
  • Using a sharp knife, gently glide along the edge of each cooled cake. Carefully flip the cakes over, remove the pans, and peel off the parchment paper. Trim the tops of the cakes with a sharp knife to create a smooth and even surface.
  • Slice each red cake layer and the white cake layer horizontally to create 4 thin red cake layers and 2 thin white cake layers.
  • Using a 4-inch round stencil, cut out a red cake round from 1 thin red cake layer. Repeat with a thin white cake layer to create a white cake round. Next, cut out the center of the blue cake using the stencil to make a blue cake ring.
  • Prepare the cake layers as specified and save the extra pieces for later use in creating decorative crumbs.
  • Begin by placing a thin 8-inch red cake layer on a cake pan and generously frosting the top with white frosting. Then, stack an 8-inch white cake layer on top of the red one and frost it. Finally, add the remaining red cake layer on top of the white one and frost it as well.
  • Stack the blue ring cake on top of the second red cake layer and frost the inside of the blue cake ring. Place the 4-inch white cake layer inside the blue cake ring and frost the top. Add the 4-inch red cake layer on top of the white one and neatly press small cake circles on the top of the blue ring.
  • Cover the cake with a lavish coating of the remaining frosting.
  • Separate the red and blue pieces of leftover cake into two bowls. Using a kitchen knife, score lines on the frosting to create a flag design with a 2-inch square at the top left for the blue field and white stars, along with 7 thick horizontal stripes about 1 inch wide.
  • Fill the top left square with blue crumbs and press 1 tablespoon of white chocolate chips upside-down into the blue to create 'stars.' Alternate filling red crumbs in the bottom stripe and every other stripe for red stripes. Generously sprinkle white sugar into the remaining stripes for a standout effect.
  • Slice the cake to showcase its patriotic layers of red, white, and blue, adorned with white chocolate chip stars in each serving.
