Amish apple dumplings: Apples stuffed, wrapped, baked to golden perfection in a sweet syrup.
Ingredients:
  • cooking spray
  • 6 medium baking apples, peeled and cored
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.66666668653488 cup shortening
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 3 cups brown sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups water
  • 0.25 cup butter
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and generously coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Place the apples in a refreshing cold water bath as you get the dough ready.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, blend flour, baking powder, and salt. Incorporate shortening using a pastry blender or fork until mixture is crumbly. Pour in milk and mix until dough forms.
  • In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of brown sugar with cinnamon. Divide dough into six equal portions and roll each out to a 1/4-inch thickness. Position an apple in the center of each piece of dough and stuff the core with the cinnamon-sugar blend. Wrap the apples in dough and arrange them in the pan.
  • In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the rest of the brown sugar with water, butter, and nutmeg. Cook for around 5 minutes until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts. Drizzle the syrup over the dumplings.
  • Bake until the dough turns golden brown and the apples become soft in the preheated oven, approximately 40 minutes.
