Make homemade "Animal Style" fries: frozen fries topped with caramelized onions, zesty sauce, and melted American cheese. Delicious In-N-Out inspired dish!
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1.5 teaspoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 4.5 cups chopped yellow onion
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 tablespoons water, divided
  • 1 (28 ounce) package frozen shoestring potato fries
  • 4 slices American cheese
Instructions:
  • Make the Spread: Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, sugar, and vinegar in a small bowl. Whisk until fully blended. Cover and set aside for serving.
  • To make the Grilled Onions, melt butter with oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally until onions are soft and golden brown, around 20 minutes. If the skillet becomes dry, add 1 tablespoon of water. Keep cooking, stirring often, adding water as needed, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the onions are very soft, deeply browned, and jam-like, for about 10 to 15 more minutes. Cover and keep warm before serving.
  • Cook the fries following the package directions.
  • Top each plate of fries equally with a slice of cheese, grilled onions, and spread.
