Delicious tart apple pie with a savory twist - sharp cheddar baked into the crust.
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled
  • 0.5 pound shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 0.25 cup ice water
  • 0.25 cup white vinegar
  • 7 large Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
Instructions:
  • Step: Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the butter and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in the cheese. Combine water and vinegar, then gradually add it in until the mixture comes together in a ball. Split the dough in half and form into balls. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Roll out one dough ball to fit a 9-inch pie plate, place it in the plate, then roll out the second crust and set it aside.
  • Prevent apple discoloration by tossing them in lemon juice in a large bowl. Remove any excess juice. Mix in sugar and cinnamon. Arrange overlapping apple slices in rows, starting from the outer rim. Add dabs of butter. Top with pie crust, seal, crimp edges, and trim excess dough. Create steam vents by making small cuts on the crust.
  • - Start by baking on a cookie sheet in a preheated oven for 15 minutes. - Then reduce the heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and keep baking for approximately 30 minutes until it turns golden brown. - Take it out of the oven, delicately brush with beaten egg, and generously sprinkle with sugar. - Finish by baking for 5 to 10 more minutes until the sugar forms a crisp glaze.
