Decadent apple crumble pie bursting with sweet sliced apples, dried cranberries, and currants in a buttery crust, topped with a golden brown sugar streusel.
Ingredients:
  • Topping:
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 6 tablespoonbutter
  • Filling:
  • 6 cups sliced peeled Granny Smith apples (about 2 1/4 pounds)
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1/4 cup dried currants
  • 1 cup fresh or thawed frozen cranberries, rinsed and drained
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 9-inch frozen pie shell (I recommend our super easy, super flaky, sour cream pastry crust )
Instructions:
  • Peel and slice the apples, placing them in a bowl. Lightly sprinkle with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to enhance their flavor and prevent discoloration. Add the cranberries to the bowl.
  • Infuse the currants with brandy: Combine the brandy and currants in a small bowl and allow them to soak until plump, for at least an hour. Meanwhile, peel and slice the apples.
  • Create a flavorful streusel topping by combining 3/4 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of brown sugar in a bowl. Incorporate butter with your fingers or a pastry blender until small lumps form.
  • Heat your oven to 375°F.
  • Combine sugar, flour, orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl. Toss in apple slices and cranberries until coated. Mix in currants and brandy.
  • Fill the pie shell with the apple filling and generously sprinkle the streusel topping over it. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips.
  • Bake: Place on bottom rack and bake until juices bubble, for 55 to 65 minutes. If pie browns quickly, loosely cover with foil. Let the pie cool on a rack, uncovered, for 2 to 3 hours. Adapted from Sunset Magazine.
