Create a delicious deep-dish apple pie with thin slices of spiced Granny Smith apples spiraled in a pie shell, topped with crumbs, and baked to perfection.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked deep dish pie crust
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup butter
  • 7 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) with the rack in the lowest position.
  • For the topping: Combine 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Blend in butter or margarine until the mixture is moist, crumbly, and easily forms clumps.
  • Prepare the filling by thinly slicing peeled, cored apples. In a separate bowl, combine the apples with white sugar, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until evenly coated.
  • Arrange the apple slices in the pie shell, stacking them higher in the center. Pour any remaining juice from the apple mixture over the apples. Sprinkle the brown sugar topping evenly over the apples to create a top crust.
  • Place the pie on a cookie sheet in the oven to catch any drippings. Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and continue baking for 45 minutes to an hour until the center of the pie is set. If the top begins to darken too quickly, simply cover it with foil. Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack before serving.
