Delightful apple Danish bars, perfect for any occasion as a sweet treat or breakfast dish.
Ingredients:
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 6 cups diced apples
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
Instructions:
  • First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Then, generously grease a 10x15-inch baking pan. Separate the egg, saving the egg white for the filling.
  • In a bowl, mix flour and salt together. Use 2 knives or a pastry blender to cut in shortening until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add milk and egg yolk and mix until combined. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Pat one part into the bottom of the pan; keep the other part aside.
  • Combine apples, brown sugar, sour cream, flour, butter, and cinnamon until evenly mixed. Spread the mixture over the dough in the pan.
  • Shape the remaining dough into a rectangle and place it on top of the filling. Whip the saved egg white until frothy, then brush it over the dough.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until top and bottom are golden brown. Allow to cool completely for about 30 minutes before cutting into bars.
