Ingredients:
  • 10 slices whole-grain bread
  • 4 medium cooking apples, peeled, cubed (4 cups)
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups half-and-half
  • 2 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 3 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups apple cider
Instructions:
  • Prepare a 13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish by greasing it with shortening or cooking spray. Lay down 5 bread slices in the dish, cutting them to fit if needed. Evenly distribute the apples over the bread and cover with the remaining 5 bread slices.
  • Combine eggs, half-and-half, 1/4 cup sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth. Pour mixture over bread and spread evenly. In a separate small bowl, mix 1 cup sugar, pecans, 3 teaspoons cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon nutmeg. Sprinkle this mixture over the top. Cover and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the French toast covered for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 35 to 45 minutes until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted halfway between the center and edge comes out clean. Allow it to stand for 10 minutes before serving.
  • In a 2-quart saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar, flour, cider, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat. Stir in butter until melted. Cut French toast into 12 squares and serve with syrup.
