Ohio-style Cincinnati chili, a crowd-pleaser! Serve over spaghetti or 4-Way with onions and Cheddar.
Ingredients:
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 quart water, or amount to cover
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 (1 ounce) square unsweetened chocolate
  • 0.25 cup chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 5 whole allspice berries
Instructions:
  • In a large pan, place the ground beef and cover it with cold water. Bring it to a boil while stirring and breaking up the beef with a fork until it reaches a fine texture. Simmer gently until the meat is fully cooked, approximately 30 minutes.
  • Combine onions, tomato sauce, vinegar, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and chocolate in a pot. Mix in chili powder, salt, cumin, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper until fully combined. Add cloves, allspice berries, and bay leaf.
  • Bring the mixture to a vigorous boil, then lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for 3 hours, stirring from time to time. If needed, add water to ensure the chili does not stick to the pot.
