Baked brussels sprouts

Create a festive winter spice side dish.
Ingredients:
  • Melted butter, to grease
  • 750g brussels sprouts
  • 40g butter
  • 40g (1/4 cup) plain flour
  • 600ml ctn milk
  • Ground white pepper
  • 65g (3/4 cup) coarsely grated gouda cheese
  • 70g (1 cup) fresh breadcrumbs (made from day-old bread)
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 180ºC and coat a 2L (8-cup) baking dish with melted butter.
  • Boil brussels sprouts in a saucepan for 4 minutes until tender crisp, then transfer to a dish.
  • In a saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter until foamy. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly. Remove from heat and gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes until sauce thickens. Season with white pepper to taste.
  • Drizzle sauce on top of brussels sprouts. Sprinkle with gouda and breadcrumbs. Bake until golden brown, for about 30-40 minutes.
