Crunchy walnut and cinnamon filling baked in crispy phyllo dough, soaked in a delightful sugar syrup. No honey used in this recipe!
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 (16 ounce) package phyllo dough
  • 5 tablespoons margarine
  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3.5 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Cut the phyllo dough to fit the pan and layer half of the sheets on the bottom. Use a food processor or blender to combine walnuts, 1/2 cup sugar, and cinnamon until finely ground. Sprinkle the walnut mixture evenly over the phyllo. Top with the remaining phyllo sheets.
  • Combine margarine and oil in a small saucepan and melt over low heat or in the microwave. Brush the melted mixture over the top layer of phyllo dough, then use a sharp knife to cut the phyllo into diamond shapes.
  • Bake on the center rack in a preheated oven until beautifully golden brown, around 30 minutes.
  • As the baklava bakes, prepare the syrup by mixing 3 1/2 cups of sugar, water, and lemon juice in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Boil the mixture, then set aside to cool slightly.
  • Once the baklava is baked, generously drizzle the hot pastry with the sweet syrup. Allow it to cool completely before enjoying this delightful treat.
