Creamy French white sauce used in lasagna, moussaka, and cheese sauces.
Ingredients:
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 quart milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Instructions:
  • Prepare all ingredients.
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt butter until smooth. Whisk in flour and cook until it turns a light golden color, about 7 minutes. Stir constantly.
  • Turn up the heat to medium-high and gradually pour in the milk while whisking until the roux thickens. Let it gently simmer, then lower the heat to medium-low and keep simmering until the flour is soft and no longer gritty, for about 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and a hint of nutmeg.
  • Savor while steaming!
