South African Bobotie: Spiced ground beef topped with a luscious milk and egg custard, creating a flavorful and aromatic dish.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 medium onions, minced
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 slices Texas toast thick-sliced bread
  • 0.5 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon hot chutney
  • 0.5 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon apricot jam
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 bay leaf
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sauté onions in oil until soft, about 2-3 minutes. Add ground beef and cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Place the milk in a shallow dish. Submerge the bread in the milk. Gently press the bread to remove excess milk, then set the milk aside.
  • Mix in bread with the beef mixture, then blend in the raisins, chutney, curry powder, apricot jam, salt, and black pepper. Transfer the flavorful mixture into the baking dish.
  • Place in the hot oven for 60 minutes.
  • Combine the saved milk, egg, and a pinch of salt using a whisk. Pour this mixture over the beef, then place a bay leaf on top.
  • Bake until the top turns a beautiful golden brown color, for about 25 to 30 minutes. Don't forget to remove the bay leaf before serving.
