Spicy onion ring sauce with mayo, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, and cayenne - ideal for blooming onions!
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons cream-style horseradish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 0.33333334326744 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.33333334326744 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 0.125 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1.5 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 0.33333334326744 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.125 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 0.75 cup vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
  • Prepare the sauce by blending mayonnaise, horseradish, ketchup, paprika, cayenne, salt, oregano, and black pepper in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.
  • Prepare the coating by thoroughly whisking together the milk and egg in a medium bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, black pepper, oregano, thyme, and cumin. Keep both bowls ready for the next step.
  • Prepare onion: Trim the top and bottom of the onion, peel off the skin, and cut out a 1-inch diameter core from the middle while keeping the root intact. Cut the onion into 16 sections without cutting through the bottom.
  • Separate the "petals" gently by plunging the onion into boiling water for 1 minute, then transferring it into cold water to halt the cooking process.
  • Take an onion and dip it into the milk mixture, making sure it's well coated. Then, coat the onion with the seasoned flour mixture, separating the petals and sprinkling the flour between them. Dip the onion back into the milk mixture and coat it with flour once more to ensure all pieces are fully coated.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep pot to 350°F (175°C, ensuring the onion will be fully submerged while frying.
  • Gently place onion, cut-side up, into the hot oil and fry until beautifully golden brown for about 10 minutes. Let it drain on a rack or paper towels.
  • Create a well in the center of the onion to perfectly cradle the dipping sauce before serving.
