Make a blooming onion using your air fryer for a delicious and visually impressive appetizer. Perfect for sharing with a tasty dipping sauce on the side.
Ingredients:
  • Blooming Onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika, plus more for garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/8 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 (14- to 16-ounces) sweet onion
  • Dipping Sauce
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons cream-style horseradish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1/4 teaspoon each paprika and salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 pinch black pepper
Instructions:
  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Combine milk and egg in a bowl and whisk until well mixed. In a separate large bowl, stir together flour, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, black pepper, oregano, thyme, and cumin.
  • Trim the top and peel the skin off the onion. Core the onion by cutting out a 1-inch diameter from the center, leaving the root end intact. Slice the onion three-fourths of the way down, turn it 90 degrees, and repeat to create 16 sections. Carefully separate the sections without cutting through the bottom.
  • Treat onion to a luxurious milk bath before giving it a flour massage, making sure to coat each petal generously. Repeat milk bath and flour coating for extra crispiness. Finish with a delicate mist of cooking spray.
  • Place the onion slices evenly in the air fryer basket and air fry until crispy for 20-25 minutes.
  • Mix mayonnaise, horseradish sauce, ketchup, paprika, salt, dried oregano, cayenne pepper, and black pepper in a small bowl. Refrigerate until the blooming onion is prepared.
  • Top blooming onion with tangy dipping sauce and a sprinkle of extra paprika for added flavor.
