Irresistible, versatile cookies loved by all, perfect for frosting or nibbling around.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter (do not use margarine)
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Melt 1 cup of butter in a 2-quart heavy saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the butter turns light brown. Let it cool for at least 10 minutes before using.
  • Combine browned butter, 2 cups brown sugar, 1/2 cup milk, and eggs in a large bowl, mixing with a spoon. Then stir in flour, baking soda, and salt. Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of dough about 2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake cookies for 9 to 11 minutes, or until the center is barely indented when touched. Let them cool for 1 to 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Allow them to cool completely for about 30 minutes.
  • In a 2-quart saucepan, melt 1/2 cup of butter over medium heat. Add 1 cup of brown sugar and stir until it boils, then pour in 1/4 cup of milk. Remove from heat and let it cool for about 30 minutes until lukewarm. Slowly mix in powdered sugar, then spread the caramel frosting on cookies.
