Delicious Caramel Apple Bars combine the best of fall: apple crisp and caramel apples in shareable bars. Fresh apples, gooey caramel, and buttery streusel make this the ultimate fall dessert. Easy to make with only 20 minutes of hands-on time, filling your home with cozy aromas. Ideal for using orchard apples and cozying up as the weather shifts.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 3/4 cups plus 3 tablespoons Gold Medal™ All Purpose Flour, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 1/2 cups coarsely chopped peeled tart apples (3 medium)
  • 1 bag (14 oz) caramels, unwrapped
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Combine brown sugar, butter, and shortening in a large bowl until creamy and fully combined.
  • Combine 1 3/4 cups of flour with the oats, salt, and baking soda until a crumbly mixture forms.
  • Set aside 2 cups of the oat mixture; firmly press the rest into an ungreased 13x9-inch pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine apples with the remaining 3 tablespoons of flour. Spread apple mixture evenly over the crust.
  • In a small saucepan, gently melt caramels over low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth.
  • Evenly pour the luscious melted caramel over the apples.
  • Evenly scatter oat mixture over the rich caramels and gently press down.
  • Bake until apples are soft and topping is golden brown, for about 25-30 minutes.
  • Allow the bars to cool on a rack for at least 20 minutes. Then, while still warm, slice the bars into 6 rows by 6 rows to make a total of 36 bars. Store the bars covered in the refrigerator.
