Caribbean-style hand pies with flaky puff pastry, seasoned beef filling.
Ingredients:
  • 500g beef mince
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes
  • 3 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 3 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 62.50 ml fresh breadcrumbs
  • 4 sheets frozen puff pastry, partially thawed
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 80g mixed salad leaves, to serve
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 220ºC (200ºC fan-forced) and prepare a baking tray by lining it with baking paper.
  • In a large frying pan over medium-high heat, heat oil. Cook brown onion and mince, using a wooden spoon to break up the mince, until browned, about 5 minutes. Add curry powder, allspice, chilli, and thyme, and cook for 1 minute while stirring. Remove pan from heat and mix in green onion and breadcrumbs. Season to taste, then allow to cool for 10 minutes.
  • Cut out 20cm circles from each pastry sheet. Divide the mince mixture evenly among the circles. Brush the edges with egg wash. Fold the pastry over the filling and press the edges to seal.
  • Lay the pies on a baking tray. Coat them with beaten egg and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden and puffed. Serve alongside a fresh salad.
