Charleston classic shrimp dish served over creamy grits, rice, or flaky biscuits.
Ingredients:
  • 3 slices bacon
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt with no MSG
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • garlic powder to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1.5 cups chicken stock
  • 1 green onion, chopped
Instructions:
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crispy. Transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain excess grease. Melt butter in the same skillet with the bacon grease until sizzling. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of flour over the butter and stir well. Cook over medium-low heat for about 12 minutes, stirring constantly, until the roux turns dark brown. Adjust heat if needed to prevent burning.
  • Once the roux turns dark brown, raise the heat to medium-high and add the onions and bell pepper. Sauté for a couple of minutes until softened. In a bowl, season the shrimp with seasoned salt, pepper, garlic powder, and some flour. Add the seasoned shrimp to the pan and stir for 1 minute. Pour in the chicken stock, reduce heat to low, and cook briefly to thicken the broth. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp. Finish by garnishing with chopped green onions and crumbled bacon. Serve over hot grits, rice, or biscuits.
