Whip up a savory Italian herb and cheese bread loaf, great for dipping in your favorite sauce or cleaning your plate.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 (1 ounce) packages dry Italian-style salad dressing mix
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano, or to taste
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese
Instructions:
  • In a bowl, combine yeast and sugar with warm water. Allow the mixture to rest until the yeast softens and a creamy foam forms, about 5 minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mix the yeast mixture with vegetable oil, salt, and half of the flour until no dry spots remain. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, making sure to mix well after each addition. Once the dough comes together, transfer it to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, approximately 8 minutes.
  • Transfer dough to a generously oiled bowl, ensuring it is coated all over. Cover with a towel and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled, at least 2 hours.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Transfer the proofed dough into an 8x8-inch square baking pan. Generously coat the dough with Italian salad dressing mix and sprinkle with oregano, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  • Bake the loaf in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the bottom sounds hollow when tapped. Sprinkle with Colby-Monterey Jack cheese and continue baking for 5 more minutes until melted. Serve warm by cutting into wedges.
