Italian Sausage Bread Pizza

Indulge in a delicious cheesy sausage bread pizza, an easy Italian meal. Opt for Make-Ahead Seasoned Ground Beef and Sausage for a quicker prep time. Simply add garlic to the mixture and simmer for a flavorful twist.
Ingredients:
  • 1 lb bulk mild or spicy Italian pork sausage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, halved, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 cup pizza sauce or tomato pasta sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 loaf French bread (about 14 inches long)
  • 2/3 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (8 oz)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 425°F and lightly coat a large cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  • In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium-high heat for 8 minutes until no longer pink. Push the sausage to the edges of the skillet and add 1 tablespoon of oil. Cook the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until the onion is softened. Remove from heat and stir in the pizza sauce, oregano, pepper flakes, and salt.
  • Using a serrated knife, halve the bread lengthwise and hollow out the center of each half, leaving a 1/2-inch border (you can discard the removed bread or keep it for making bread crumbs). Place the bread halves on a cookie sheet. Spread 1/3 cup of ricotta cheese down the center of each half. Top evenly with the sausage mixture, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Finally, drizzle the loaves with the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil.
  • Bake until heated through and cheese is bubbly, about 6 minutes. Slice and garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.
