Elevate cherry shortbread bars with maraschino cherries and nuts for a delicious and irresistible dessert.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking powder
  • 5 ounces maraschino cherries
  • 0.5 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1.5 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and prepare a 9x13-inch pan by lining it with sturdy aluminum foil.
  • Combine flour, 1 cup of butter, and white sugar until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press firmly into the bottom of the pan.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Combine brown sugar, eggs, salt, baking powder, and vanilla extract in a bowl, blending until smooth. Drain and chop cherries, saving the liquid. Mix cherries and walnuts into the egg mixture. Spread mixture over the baked crust.
  • Bake for an additional 25 minutes until fully set. Allow to cool before serving.
  • Mix together powdered sugar and 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter, adding cherry liquid gradually until a spreadable consistency is reached. Frost the cooled bars, then slice into squares once the icing has set.
