Crispy chicken fried steak with creamy homemade gravy - a family favorite!
Ingredients:
  • 3 (8 ounce) beef eye of round steaks
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce (such as Frank's RedHot ®)
  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1.5 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1.5 tablespoons smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground ancho chile powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground chipotle powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground sage
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground mustard powder
  • 1 quart peanut oil for frying, or as needed
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream
Instructions:
  • Prepare the steaks by removing any fat caps. Season the steaks generously with salt, followed by Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce. Allow the steaks to marinate for 30 minutes for optimal flavor infusion.
  • Place one steak on the cutting board and shield it with plastic wrap. Tenderize the steak with a meat mallet until it doubles in size and becomes half as thick. Repeat the process with the other two steaks.
  • In a shallow bowl, pour 2 cups of flour. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, and hot sauce. In a large bowl, combine the remaining ingredients: 3 cups flour, bread crumbs, baking powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, Cajun seasoning, sea salt, chile seasoning, black pepper, thyme, oregano, sweet paprika, chipotle powder, cumin, sage, mustard powder, and cayenne pepper.
  • Coat each steak piece in plain flour, egg wash, and breading, ensuring full coverage at each stage. Place on a plate and refrigerate for 1 hour to ensure the breading sticks perfectly to the meat.
  • Prepare the gravy by melting butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour until it turns light golden brown and has a paste-like consistency, which should take around 5 minutes. Slowly pour in beef broth and then gradually add cream. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low and let it thicken, stirring occasionally. Keep warm while you cook the steaks.
  • Preheat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375°F (190°C).
  • Fry steaks in hot oil until breading is crispy and golden brown, for 6 to 7 minutes. Then, transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  • Drizzle the steaming hot steaks with rich gravy before serving.
