Make a NYC-inspired Chopped Cheese sandwich with seasoned beef, American cheese, and toppings on a hoagie roll for a satisfying meal that will become your new favorite.
Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds (80/20 blend) ground beef
  • 1 white onion, chopped4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 6 hoagie or bolillo rolls12 slices American cheese
  • 6 tablespoons mayonnaiseShredded iceberg lettuce, for servingTomato slices, for serving
Instructions:
  • Sear the ground beef in a spacious skillet over gentle heat until it releases its fat and breaks into crumbles, ensuring some parts remain pink. Stir frequently for even cooking.
  • Once the beef is browned and most of the fat has rendered out (7-8 minutes of cooking), increase the heat to medium. Add onions and garlic and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until vegetables soften. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce, then remove from heat.
  • Toast the buns by slicing your rolls in half and browning them in batches on a griddle or in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Mix the cheese with the ground beef: Divide the beef filling into 1/6 portions for each sandwich and place on a preheated griddle or skillet over medium-low heat. Once hot, top each portion with two slices of American cheese and allow it to melt. Use a metal spatula to gently incorporate the melted cheese into the beef mixture if desired.
  • Place the toasted roll on the ground beef with 1 tablespoon of mayo spread on one side. Then cover the beef filling by placing the roll, toasted side down, on top of the chopped beef mixture.
  • Assemble sandwich: After 30 seconds, use a spatula to flip the roll to contain the filling. Replace any spilled filling back onto the roll. Layer with shredded lettuce and sliced tomato. Cut in half and serve immediately. Leftover chopped cheese filling can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Enjoy the sandwich fresh or grill directly from the fridge. Recommendations: Make as many sandwiches as needed. Use any extra filling for future sandwiches. Share your feedback and rating below!
