A beloved classic with a twist - try using canned peaches or pineapple instead of apples for a delicious variation!
Ingredients:
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 apples - peeled, cored and sliced
  • 0.5 cup shortening
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) for a perfect bake.
  • 1. Coat the bottom of an 8-inch square pan with melted butter and ensure even coverage. Sprinkle brown sugar over the butter and arrange apple slices on top. Set aside. 2. In a medium bowl, cream together shortening and white sugar. Add egg and vanilla, beat until light and fluffy. 3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir into the creamed mixture alternately with milk. 4. Pour the batter into the pan, ensuring the fruit is fully covered.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, then invert onto a serving plate. Enjoy warm with ice cream or sauce.
