Irresistible cheesy broccoli casserole with buttery crumbs - a kid-approved favorite!
Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds fresh broccoli, coarsely chopped
  • 1 large onion, coarsely chopped
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 (14 ounce) can evaporated milk, divided
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cup cubed sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease a 9x12-inch baking dish.
  • In a saucepan, combine broccoli and onion with water. Bring to a boil, then simmer covered until broccoli turns vibrant green and begins to soften, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Combine flour and 1/4 cup evaporated milk, whisking until smooth. Mix the rest of the evaporated milk and salt with broccoli. Gently fold in the flour mixture, simmer until thickened for 2 to 3 minutes. Take off the heat and stir in sharp Cheddar cheese, stirring until melted into the sauce.
  • In a small skillet over medium heat, cook and stir bread crumbs with butter until butter melts and crumbs release a toasty aroma, about 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Pour the broccoli mixture into the baking dish and generously top the casserole with the crunchy crumbs.
  • Bake in the oven until golden and bubbly, approximately 30 minutes.
